Short Story 21: Round Tripping Riddle

In a curious little nook of the world, where the sunbeams danced and the shadows played, a question flitted through the air like a butterfly: “Is that a paper plane? Is that a pencil? Is it an eraser, perhaps?” But lo! A voice rang out, clear and bright, “Nay, my friends. That’s Elementary Man!”

The Call for Help
One day, our detective was lounging in his cozy office, surrounded by stacks of case files and laptops. Suddenly, the phone rang, breaking the silence.

“Elementary Man, we need your help!” said a woman’s voice on the other end. “Nexon Corp. is up to something fishy!”

Elementary Man leaned back in his chair, a grin spreading across his face. “Fishy, you say? I love a good fish tale! I’ll be there in a jiffy!”

The Sneaky Spies
Elementary Man arrived at Nexon Corp., a towering building that gleamed in the sunlight. Inside, he met his two stockbrokers, Felix Fumbleton and Greta Gimmick, who now worked at Nexon and Apex Advisors.

“Elementary Man!” Felix said, adjusting his tie nervously. “I’m glad you’re here. We’ve been digging into Nexon’s financials, and it’s not looking good.”

Elementary Man raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean, Felix? Spill the beans!”

Felix leaned in closer, glancing around to ensure no one was listening. “Well, it seems Nexon is engaging in some questionable practices. They’re selling and buying back the same things. It’s called round-tripping!”

Elementary Man scratched his chin. “Round-tripping? That sounds like a merry-go-round! But what does that really mean?”

Greta chimed in, her voice low but urgent. “It’s a way to inflate their revenue figures without actually making any real sales. They sell an asset, like a power plant, to another shell company which it owns. The selling price is way higher than what it should be. It creates the illusion of increased sales and profits.”

Felix nodded vigorously. “Exactly! They make it look like they’re doing great business, but it’s just smoke and mirrors. The money doesn’t really change hands in a meaningful way.”

Elementary Man’s eyes sparkled with interest. “So, they’re essentially playing a game of pretend? That’s clever, but also very risky. What happens when someone catches on?”

Greta sighed. “That’s the problem. If the truth comes out, it could lead to serious consequences for the company. Investors could lose trust, and the regulatory authorities would come down hard on them.”

Felix added, “And the worst part is, they’re hiding their real profits. If we can find solid evidence of this round-tripping, we can expose them!”
Elementary Man nodded, a determined look on his face. “Then we need to dig deeper. Let’s gather more information and see if we can uncover the truth behind Nexon’s financial practices.”

Greta leaned in, her voice low. “They’re hiding their real profits. I overheard some executives talking about ‘creative accounting.’ We need to dig deeper.”

Elementary Man nodded. “Let’s gather information. Felix, you check the public records. Greta, talk to your contacts at Apex. I’ll meet you both back here in two hours.”

The Twist in the Tale
Two hours later, the three met in Elementary Man’s office. Felix looked worried. “I found some records, but they’re confusing. Nexon’s numbers don’t add up!”

Greta nodded, her brow furrowed. “I spoke to someone at Apex. They said Nexon is using trick accounting to hide their real profits. But they wouldn’t give me any details.”
Felix Fumbeton and Greta Gimmick now worked as the spies of Elementary Man our hero of our short story

Elementary Man rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “Hmm, we need more than whispers and records. We need solid proof. What if we set up a meeting with the Nexon executives? We can ask them about their business strategies without raising suspicion.”

Felix’s eyes lit up. “That’s a great idea! But how do we get them to talk?”

Elementary Man grinned. “We’ll need a clever ruse. Let’s pretend we’re interested investors. They’ll be eager to impress us!”

The Hidden Data
The next day, Elementary Man, Felix, and Greta attended a Nexon Corp. meeting, dressed in their best suits. The executives were all smiles, presenting their latest profits.

“Welcome, everyone! We’re excited to share our success!” said the CEO, beaming.
The fraudulent CEO tried to use his smile and charm on Elementary Man, the hero of our short story

Elementary Man leaned forward, feigning interest. “Your profits look impressive! What’s your secret to maintaining such high numbers in a challenging market?”

The room buzzed with excitement. The CEO smiled wider. “We have a unique approach to asset management that keeps us ahead of the competition!”

Felix chimed in, “That sounds fascinating! Can you tell us more about your strategies?”

The CEO nodded, eager to share. “We focus on maximizing our resources and ensuring our transactions are beneficial for all parties involved.”
Elementary Man exchanged a knowing glance with Greta. “Beneficial transactions, you say? How do you ensure that your financial reports reflect this success?”

The executives shifted in their seats, their smiles faltering. “We have a dedicated team that manages our financial reporting,” one of them replied, a hint of nervousness in his voice.

Greta leaned in, her curiosity piqued. “And how do you handle fluctuations in the market? It must be challenging to keep everything balanced.”
The CEO cleared his throat. “We adapt quickly. Our financial strategies are designed to be flexible.”

Elementary Man smiled slyly. “Flexibility is key! But I wonder, how do you maintain such high revenues while managing costs?”

The CEO’s expression tightened. “We have our ways. It’s all about strategic planning.”

After the meeting, Elementary Man and his spies gathered in a nearby café to discuss their next steps. “We need to find more evidence,”

Elementary Man said. “Let’s dig into their financial reports and see if we can uncover anything.”

Felix pulled out his laptop. “I can access Nexon’s public filings. Maybe we can find discrepancies.”

As they worked, Elementary Man noticed a pattern in the numbers. “Look at this! They report high revenues but have low cash flow. Something doesn’t add up!”

Greta leaned in, her eyes wide. “If we can prove they’re inflating their profits, we can expose them!”

Just then, Felix’s phone buzzed. “It’s a message from my contact at Apex”, he exclaimed, his eyes lighting up. He quickly read the message aloud. “They’ve found some internal documents that show Nexon’s financial practices. They’re hidden in a secure folder on their server!”

Elementary Man leaned in, intrigued. “That’s exactly what we need! But how do we get access to those documents?”

Greta thought for a moment. “I could use my credentials to log in. I have a friend in IT who owes me a favor. If I can get him to help, we might be able to access the server after hours.”

Elementary Man nodded, impressed. “That’s a clever plan! Let’s do it. We’ll meet at Nexon tonight.”

The Late-Night Operation
That night, the trio gathered outside Nexon Corp. The building loomed above them, dark and quiet. Greta led the way to a side entrance, where her IT friend, Max, was waiting.

“Thanks for helping us, Max,” Greta whispered. “We need to access the financial server.”

Max nodded, glancing around nervously. “I can get you in, but we have to be quick. If anyone sees us, we’re in trouble.”

They slipped inside, and Max led them to a small room filled with computers. He quickly typed in his credentials and opened the server. “Okay, I’m in! Now, let’s find that folder.”

As Max navigated through the files, Elementary Man and the others kept watch. “Hurry, Max!” Felix urged, glancing at the door.

“Got it!” Max exclaimed, pulling up a folder labeled “Confidential Financial Reports.” He began downloading the files onto a USB drive.

Suddenly, they heard footsteps approaching. “Quick! Hide!” Elementary Man whispered, and they ducked behind a row of filing cabinets.

The door opened, and a security guard walked in, yawning. He glanced around, then turned to leave. “Just my imagination,” he muttered.

Once the coast was clear, Max finished downloading the files. “Let’s get out of here!” he said, handing the USB drive to Elementary Man.

The Big Reveal

Back at Elementary Man’s office, they gathered around the computer to review the files. As they opened the documents, their eyes widened in disbelief.

“Look at this!” Greta exclaimed. “They’ve been manipulating their revenue figures! This is clear evidence of round-tripping!”

Felix pointed to a chart. “And here! They show inflated profits while their cash flow is almost nonexistent. They’re hiding losses!”

Elementary Man grinned. “This is exactly what we need to expose Nexon Corp. Let’s take this to the regulatory authorities!”

The next day, they presented their findings to the authorities. Elementary Man laid out the evidence with confidence. “Nexon Corp. has been deceiving investors and manipulating their financial statements through round-tripping and other deceptive practices.”

The authorities gasped. “That’s extraordinary, man!” they exclaimed.

“Nay, my friends. That’s Elementary Man!” he replied with a grin.

Moral:  Be careful of believing in inflated revenues and profits. Round-tripping can hide the truth, and honesty is the best policy in business.
